Sydney is a Summit County local and grew up playing for the Summit Youth Hockey Organization. She played for the Summit Girls U12 team and the Summit Boys Peewee A team for coach Wren Arbuthnot. Summit Youth Hockey taught Sydney to truly love the game of hockey!
Similar to many hockey players, Sydney started out as a figure skater and fell in love with being on the ice! However, she loved the competitiveness of hockey and realized being part of a team was more appealing then skating alone. Growing up, she would watch her older brother Sean play at the Stephen C. West Ice Arena and even saw his team win the DNHL Peewee state championship in 2012. Her little sister, Sierra also plays hockey for Summit Girls U10 program. Sydney is thankful for the sport of ice hockey because it has brought her lifelong friendships and awesome travel opportunities that she will never forget.
Currently, Sydney is a sophomore at the prestigious Shattuck-St. Mary’s School in Faribault, Minnesota. Shattuck is one of the most prominent feeders of young hockey talent in the world and its mix of elite male and female players is unprecedented. NHL’ers Sydney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, Zach Parise and Jonathan Toews attended Shattuck as well as Olympians Monique and Jocelyne Lamoureux, Amanda Kessel and Brianna Decker. Sydney’s biggest accomplishment is being given the opportunity to play for Shattuck’s U16 Girls Tier 1 hockey team.
Since Shattuck St. Mary’s School is a boarding school, Sydney gets to live with her teammates. She loves how independent she gets to be at school and even enjoys the extra responsibilities. While at school, Sydney is responsible for doing her own laundry, completing her homework, eating well balanced nutritional meals and making sure she is at practice on time. She believes living with your teammates allows you to build a lifelong bond because you are with your teammates all day, every day on and off the ice. “They really become your family away from home,” Sydney quoted.
When Sydney is not playing hockey, she enjoys other activities like skinning, road cycling, hiking, and camping. She also loves country music, the beach, hanging out with friends and traveling! Sydney is not only athletic but she is also musically talented. For 8 years, she has been a classically trained violinist! One thing you might not know about Sydney is she is not a big fan of scary movies. Her role model is Kendall Coyne, who is a female American professional ice hockey player and a member of the United States women’s national ice hockey team. Sydney admires Kendall because she is such a hard worker and has never let her size or any adversity keep her from achieving her goals. Sydney’s life motto is “my success and happiness in life has a lot to do with how much effort I put into everything and how positive my attitude is!”
